Lombok has been a favourite holiday destination for travellers for many years. Offering some of the most remote and stunning beaches it is not hard to see why Lombok and the surrounding islands are as popular as they are. Not only offering the tranquility of sun soaked beaches and crystal clear waters, Lombok’s capital, Mataram is a hive of tourist activity along with the mighty Gunung Rinjani, which has been attracting hikers and trekkers since the early 1980’s. Sunbawa, in east Lombok, offers a great place for all surfing enthusiasts with some very good surf breaks. If you are looking for a holiday with a difference, Lombok’s lush evergreen landscapes are not to be missed.
The most popular tourist areas in and around Lombok are littered with hotels and resorts ranging from budget guesthouses, which are perfect for the backpacking hoards, to the 5 star, more recognizable, hotels close to the beach, which are perfect for the couples and honeymooners. Mataram on the mainland of Lombok has most of the best hotels, but the more tourists orientated Gili Trawangan has by far the most populated hotels in the regions. Travelers come from far and wide and during the high season all ranges of hotels get fully booked so booking early is imperative. Booking your accommodation or hotel couldn’t be easier as our complete booking system with Agoda is live 24/7 and ready to make your dream holiday come true.
Being so close to the equator, there are no real seasons in Indonesia and because of this it is hot hot hot all year round. Just like the rest of this lower region of Asia, you have to contend with the monsoon rains and high winds during parts of the year. There isn’t a best time to go to Lombok or the Gili Islands as the weather is generally hot and dry for most parts, but officially the dry season begins in Apr and end in October and the wet season starts in November until March. When it rains however, you can expect small sporadic showers that last for around 30 minutes to and hour.
Some of the better activities in and around Lombok are diving, snorkeling, fishing and surfing. The surrounding waters and islands of Lombok are teaming with very lively coral reefs and abundant in the most colourful marine you will see. Visibility is generally good all year round and the many dive shops, especially on Gili Trawangan, can organize fun dives, night dives and can also instruct for those looking to enhance their diving skills. Snorkeling is also very popular, however, some places are best suited to more experienced swimmers as tides and currents can be strong. Surfing is also a Lombok favourite, with the beaches in north and south both offering great breaks – just follow the locals to find the best spots. If water isn’t your thing, then Lombok offers a wide range of land activities too. Trekking around Mount Rinjani or shopping in the many markets and shopping malls are the most popular with tourists.
